vigil

She sits in silence
In the dark of the night
Watching and waiting
And wanting the light

Ever vigilant,
Sitting there, still
Worrying, worrying
Praying there till

A move there beside her
A smile ever slight
The crisis is over
Oh what a delight

So sit all mothers
Who watch in the night
And nurse a sick baby
Through sickness and blight

It matters not colour,
Or class or creed
Country, religion,
Her child was in need

So often we take them
For granted, who cares
As they sit in the darkness
Nursing their heirs.
